The trade-off is that it needs to integrate cleanly with your existing roof pitch, guttering and flashing — get this wrong and you end up with water pooling or leaks at the join, which is why correct engineering at the attachment point matters more here than almost anywhere else in the build.

Freestanding Pergolas

A freestanding pergola stands independently of your house, giving you complete flexibility over where it goes — beside a pool, at the back of a large yard, or anywhere an attached structure isn't practical. Because it isn't tied to your home's existing roofline, a freestanding pergola can also be oriented purely for sun and shade performance rather than compromising with your house's existing angles. The trade-off is a full independent footing and post structure, which generally makes it a larger job than an attached equivalent of the same size.
